About the Diocese
The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles is a faith community of nearly 50,000 parishioners worshiping in 132 church sites spanning Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and Northwest Riverside County. With 39 schools attended by some 8,000 students, the diocese also includes social-service ministries focused on adoptions and foster care, food security, immigration, recovery, and youth empowerment, among other programs.
The diocese is preparing to welcome its eighth bishop, the Rev. Dr. Antonio José Gallardo Lucena, who was elected by Diocesan Convention on November 8, 2025 and is scheduled to be ordained and consecrated on July 11, 2026. Bishop-elect Gallardo L. has chosen for his ministry the theme “In the Spirit of Love and Truth / En el Espíritu de Amor y Verdad.” Read Bishop-elect Gallardo L.’s biography.
Diocesan worship services are held at St. John’s Cathedral, with its century-old landmark sanctuary located at 514 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles. The diocesan offices are located at St. Paul’s Commons, 840 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles, a vibrant center of interfaith collaboration and service.
Members of the diocese conduct ministries in seven languages: Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), English, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. It is one of the most culturally diverse and geographically far-flung (spanning more than 29,000 square miles) of the 106 dioceses of the 22-nation Episcopal Church and the wider Anglican Communion.
Established in 1896, the Diocese of Los Angeles is governed by its convention, which usually holds its annual meeting in November in Riverside with delegates including clergy and elected lay persons from each congregation and affiliated institution.
